As much as I think the #Selfie song is complete garbage and should never be white noise fuel for your poor ears, it does (being the song's title) mark a great point for today's self-obsessed society. With selfie sticks now retailing (and actually being purchased as well) narcissism has never been more prominent than today. Publishing thoughts to Facebook and Twitter feeds can become an active journal for many, as we peek into the not-so-secret lives of our friends, acquaintances and work colleagues on various social networks.

While we didn't call selfies "selfies" until a few years ago, we called them "MySpace poses" or SELF PORTRAITS back in the day, selfies have been a big thing since the late 1800s and early 1900s. Our narcissistic desires are eagerly pleased by the amount of "likes" we receive on our next profile picture. And why do we need gratification from our peers? Well, we don't. But it makes us feel awesome when somebody thinks posing next to a billboard with a sign saying "ALCOHOL: Because no great story ever started with [insert a normal, every day, mundane activity here]" gets a bunch of likes. Yes, it's true, I did see that yesterday on my feed. Or when someone posts a picture of a dress they think is blue and black, but everyone else sees as gold and white and BREAKS THE GOD DAMN INTERNET (for one whole day). And no, we don't care what colour it was. Jeez.

So. Narcissism - March's Half Hour Challenge that ties in rather nicely into Inkblots' theme for this month: reflection.

Happy writing. :P

Great theme choice for March. Oh dear 'MySpace poses' brings back cringey memories haha

You're telling me. :P

I was unfortunate enough to get tagged in that first profile pic "thing" that went round on Facebook around a month or so ago. Mine happened to be one I pulled from MySpace, which I took ten years ago. The internet makes me feel old.

Good luck writing! :)
